John Ireland Sonata for cello & piano 1923
Frederick Delius Sonata for cello & piano 1916
Frank Bridge Sonata for cello & piano 1917
Frank Bridge Melodie 1911
Frank Bridge Cradle Song 1910
Edward Elgar Chanson de Matin; Chanson de Nuit Op.15
Britain before Britten is comprised of works by British composers
of the early twentieth century. Sonatas of Frederick Delius
(1916), Frank Bridge (1917) and John Ireland (1923) are interspersed
with salon pieces by Elgar and Bridge and at the University
of Toronto's Walter Hall, our introductory performance of
this program was very well received. The very specifically
related material is designed to investigate those composers
who prepared the ground for Benjamin Britten's meteoric success
as Britain's first truly Internationalist composer. With the
exception of Elgar, these composers are loosely grouped under
the collective title of the 'English Impressionists'. Although
their music, especially from the turbulent time of the Great
War, is quite distinct in style from one composer to the other
if preferred it would certainly be possible to substitute
the Britten Sonata Op.65 (the oldest work on my first CD Music
of a life so far...) which would provide clear variety, dynamic
contrast and a view of what was yet to come.
Program 2
JS Bach Suite for unaccompanied cello No.1 in G major
Lothar Klein Troubadour - solo cello
Lv Beethoven Variations on the theme Bei Mannern, welche Liebe
fuhlen from Mozart's Opera Die Zauberflote
D Shostakovich Sonata Op.40
This program begins with the contrast of two major works
for solo cello - one from 1720's Germany and the other from
1980's Canada. We are then led through the magic of Beethoven
into the drama of Russian master Dmitri Shostakovich.
Program 3
Lv Beethoven Variations on the theme Bei Mannern, welche
Liebe fuhlen from Mozart's Opera Die Zauberflote
Alice Ho Caprice - solo cello
Benjamin Britten Sonata in C op.65 for cello and piano
Dialogo
Scherzo - pizzicato
Elegia
Marcia
Moto Perpetuo
Gary Kulesha ...and dark time flowed by her like a river...
Robert Schumann Five Pieces in Folk Style
David Popper Polonaise de Concert
This program includes the works of two Canadian composers:
Alice Ho and Gary Kulesha, alongside the 20th Century masterwork
of Benjamin Britten and a rarely heard virtuoso Polonaise
of David Popper. The popular set of Variations by Beethoven
on a theme of Mozart and Schumann's suite of five rustic folk
pieces complete the recital with a substantial nod towards
the traditional repertoire.
